Welcome to the National Association of Caribbean-American Journalists’ website. One of the goals of this new and exciting movement is to build a strong network for journalists of Caribbean origin. We have a growing list of members from leading newspapers, broadcast networks and online media outlets in various cities across the U.S. and the Caribbean.
You may ask: why, pray tell, a NACAJ? Simply put: A cursory look at mainstream and not-so-mainstream media outlets painfully demonstrates a plethora of reasons for our existence.
So NACAJ is here to stay. And I hope you will keep checking here for updated news about our progress toward building this necessary institution to represent Caribbean-American journalists and the Caribbean-American Diaspora. We will advocate for and monitor coverage of the Caribbean-American Diaspora in the U.S. And in some cases, we will move our agenda forward by collaborating with other media organizations and entities that share
our mission.
The term “Caribbean-American” is relatively new, even though Caribbean Americans have been coming to America before 1776. Consider this: Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of this great country, was born on the island of Nevis. John Russworm, the founder of the first black newspaper in March 1827, Freedom’s Journal, was born in Jamaica. Jean Baptiste DuSable, who founded Chicago in 1779, was born in Haiti. And W.E.B. DuBois’ father also hails from Haiti. Yes, our history in the U.S. is deep and rich. So it is time to tell our own stories. That’s because we, too, sing America.
Join the chorus. You can help us fulfill our mission by becoming a member, an affiliate or just a supporter. See our website for more information. And come mingle with us at our first national meeting and job fair March 28-30, 2008 at the Marriott-Renaissance Plantation Hotel in South Florida. Register early to catch our fantastic hotel rates and special discounts on airfares during one of this year’s busiest traveling season. This year, we will recognize outstanding coverage of the Caribbean in the U.S. media and reward Caribbean-American journalists and students for excellence in journalism. Please consider this your official invitation to join us at a historic meeting as we aim henceforth to “walk good.”
Yours in Service, Battle-tested and Ready,
